Drug administration: all routes and necessary instructions

| nasal administration | have client blow nose prior, lay supine with head tilted back, remain supine and avoid blowing nose for a few minutes |
| ophthalmic administration | tilt head back, have client look up, place hands on client's forehead, pull skin beneath eye down, instill eyedrops to lower outer conjunctival sac, close eye and apply pressure to inner canthus |
| teaching ophthalmic administration to client | do not allow tip to touch eye, close eyes and hold pressure for 30-60 seconds (prevents systemic absorption) |
| otic drug administration | side-lying position for client, place hands against head and above pinna, straighten ear canal, press tragus 2x, place cotton into meatus of external canal |
| otic administration children under 3 | pull pinna down and back because ear canal is straight and directed upward |
| otic administration adults | pull pinna up and and back because canal is "S" shaped |
