Ecology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Invasive species | a species of plant or animal that outcompetes other species, causing damage to an ecosystem. |
| Ecology | a branch of biology that deals with the interactions among organisms and their environment. |
| Ecosystem | an ecosystem is made up of all the living things, such as bacteria, plants, and animals, that interact with one another. |
| Abiotic | non-living |
| Biotic | living |
| Biomes | are large geographic areas of the earth identified by a particular type of dominant plant and animal life |
| Population | All the organisms of a species that live in the same area |
| Community | All the different populations combine to form a community. A community includes all the populations, both plant an animal, living in a given area. |
| Biosphere | All of Earth’s ecosystems make up the biosphere- the part of Earth upon which life exists. Throughout the biosphere, organisms interact and compete for vital resources, such as food, space, and shelter. |
| Ecological Niche | The role that each species plays in an ecosystem. Only one species at a time can occupy a particular niche. If two species attempt to fill the same role in an ecosystem, competition results. |
| Saprophytes(decomposers) | Heterotrophic plants, bacteria, and fungi that feed on dead and decaying organisms. |
| Mutualism | Both organisms benefit. Example: E. Coli bacteria live in your intestines and make vitamin K for you |
| Commensalism | 1 organism benefits & the other is not affected. Example: Clams making a home on the underside of a horseshoe crab’s shell while the horseshoe crab is unaffected. |
| Parasitism | 1 organism benefits while the other is harmed. Ex. Tapeworm (parasite- cause harm) lives inside the body of an organism such as a cat or dog (host). |
