Moon & Tides Eng

TermDefinition
Satellite Any body/material that orbits around another body
Moon's rotation on it's axis 27.3 days
Moon's revolution around earth 27.3 days
Moon's formation left over material from other planet's forming and colliding
Moon's orbit shape Elliptical
Moon's impact on Earth Impacts Earth's wobble (obliquity) and the tides
New moon looks like no moon
Full moon looks like moon is fully lit up in the sky
Quarter moon looks like Half of the moon we can see is lit up
Crescent moon looks like a small slice of the moon we can see is lit up
Gibbous moon looks like Most of the moon we can see is lit up
Waxing moon phases are increasing in their percent of illumination
Waning moon phases are decreasing in their percent of illumination
Sidereal month length of one complete moon phase is 29.5 days
Tides periodic rise and fall of the sea/ocean level
Tides are caused by the moon's gravitational pull on Earth
High tide occurs where the earth is closest to the moon, and the side of the earth directly opposite
Low tide occurs where the earth is furthest from the moon, and the side of the earth directly opposite (right angle to the moon)
Spring tides are very high high tides, very low low tides
Spring tides occur during full and new moons because they are lined up with the sun
Neap tides are lower high tides and higher low tides
Neap tides occur during quarter moons, when Earth, moon, and sun are at a right angle
Flood tide "watermark" of the highest point of the high tide
Ebb tide lowest point of the low tide
Eclipse when one celestial body passes in front of another, casting a shadow
Umbra (eclipse) sunlight is completely blocked out
Penumbra (eclipse) sunlight is partially blocked out
Solar Eclipse Moon passes between Sun and Earth, moon blocks out sun's light from the Earth
Solar Eclipses only occur during a new moon phase
Lunar eclipse Earth passes between Moon and Sun, Earth blocks sun's light from the moon
Lunar eclipses only occur during a full moon phase
Eclipses do not happen because the celestial bodies need to be in the "correct" order and line up in a straight line
You can only see an eclipse if you are in a location that aligns with the umbra and penumbra

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
