Eight bones composing the cranium parieta , sphenoid, ethmoid, zygomatic, nasal, temporal, lacrimal and frontal bone
frontal bone forming anterior cranium, or forehead
zygomatic cheekbone
maxilla upper jaw
nasal bridge of nose
palatine posterior roof of mouth
parietal bone pair united by the sagittal suture
temporal site of jugular foramen and carotid canal
sphenoid contains a “saddle” that houses the pituitary gland
lacrimal has an opening that allows tears to pass

ethmoid superior and medial nasal conchae are part of this bone
temporal site of the external auditory meatus
sphenoid has greater and lesser wings

occipital its oval shaped protrusions articulate with the atlas
occipital spinal cord passes through a large opening in this bone
hyoid not really a skull bone
mandible forms the chin
vomer inferior part of nasal septum
mandible, maxilla contain alveoli bearing teeth
ethmoid bears an upward protrusion called the roosters comb
vertebral foramen cavity enclosing the nerve cord
body weight-bearing portion of the vertebra
spinous process, transverse process provide levers against which muscles pull
body, transverse process provide an articulation point for the ribs
intervertebral foramina opening providing for exit of spinal nerves
body, vertebral arch structures that form an enclosure for the spinal cord
cervical vertebra vertebral type with bifid (forked) spinous process
atlas pivots on C2; lacks a body
thoracic vertebra bear facets for articulation with ribs; forms part of bony thoracic cage
sacrum forms a joint with the hip bone
lumbar vertebra vertebra with blocklike body and short, stout spinous process
cocoyx “tailbone”
atlas articulates with the occipital condyles
