Pig Anatomy Parts
identifying a list of pig parts and their functions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Pharynx | Allows food and air into the body. |
| Epiglottis | Flap in pharynx that prevents food from entering the trachea. |
| Larynx | Voice box; sound is generated. |
| Esophagus | Passsageway that connects the mouth and the stomach. |
| Trachea | Passageway that connects the mouth and the lungs. |
| Lungs | Allows for breathing of oxygen. |
| Diaphragm | Contracts to create suction in the lungs so they draw in air. |
| Liver | Breaks down toxins, metabolizes proteins and lipids, produces bile. |
| Gall Bladder | Stores bile produced by the liver. |
| Stomach | Churns food and releases hydrochloric acid to kill ingested bacteria. |
| Duodenum | Beginning part of small intestine; breaks down food using enzymes. |
| Pancreas | Store digestive enzymes; produces hormones. |
| Mesentery | Attaches the small intestine to the abdomen. |
| Jejuno-illeum | Most of the small intestine; absorbs nutrients broken down by duodenum. |
| Colon | Extracts water and salts from solid waste. |
| Spleen | Filters red blood cells; activates immune response in white blood cells. |
| Rectum | Storage site for feces. |
| Caecum | Connects the small intestine with the large intestine. |
| Thymus | Produces T-Lymphocytes. |
| Thyroid | Produces hormones. |
| Heart | Pumps blood throughout the body. |
| Pericardial sac | Protects and lubricates the heart. |
| Right / left atrium | The right atrium receives de-oxygenated blood from the superior vena cava. The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the left and right pulmonary veins |
| Right / left ventricle | The right ventricle pumps blood into the pulmonary circulation for the lungs. the left ventricle pumps blood into the systemic circulation through the aorta for the rest of the body. |
| Coronary artery | Carries oxygen and nutrients to the heart. |
| Pulmonary trunk | The "pipe" that your blood goes through to get from the right side of the heart to the lungs to get oxygenated. |
| Ductus arteriosus | Prevents blood from going into the non-functioning lungs of a fetus. |
| Pulmonary artery / vein | The pulmonary arteries transport deoxygenated blood to the left and right lungs. The pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium. |
| Posterior vena cava | Carries deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body and bring it to the heart. |
| Anterior vena cava | Carries deoxygenated blood from the upper part of the body and bring it to the heart. |
| Brachiocephalic vein | Brings de-oxygenated blood from the head, neck and arm regions of the body to the right atrium. |
| Internal/external jugular vein | Returns blood from the head to the heart. |
| Carotid Artery | Supplies the head and neck with oxygenated blood. |
| Aortic arch | Carries blood from the dorsal blood vessel to the ventral blood vessel. |
| Descending (thoratic) aorta | Carry blood mostly from the aortic arch to either your head or your legs. |
| Dorsal aorta (abdominal aorta) | The chief artery that arises from the heart to distribute blood to the body. |
| Celiac artery | Supplies oxygenated blood to the liver, stomach, abdominal esophagus, spleen and the superior half of both the duodenum and the pancreas. |
| Anterior mesenteric artery | Supplies the large intestine. |
| Renal artery / vein | Renal artery supplies oxygenated blood to the kidney. Renal vein takes deoxygenated blood away from the kidney. |
| Ureter | Muscular tubes that propel urine from the kidneys to the bladder. |
| Kidney | Filter blood and remove wastes. |
| Urinary bladder | Stores urine prior to disposal. |
| Urethra | Carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body. In males, also carries semen. |
| Peritoneum | Membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. Serves as a conduit for blood and lymph vessels and nerves. |
| Vas deferens | Transport sperm from the epididymis in anticipation of ejaculation. |
| Testis | Create sperm. |
| Penis | Male sexual organ used for reproduction and urination. |
| Bulbourethral gland | Produces a clear, viscous secretion known as pre-ejaculate during sexual arousal. |
| Epididymis | Stores sperm prior to ejaculation. |
| Umbilical artery / vein | The umbilical artery supplies deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta. The umbilical vein carries oxygenated blood from the placenta to the growing fetus. |
