The Carbon Cycle

TermDefinition
scientific model a representation or description designed to make a particular part/feature of the world easier to understand
photosynthesis a chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose) and oxygen
chloroplast the structures within plant cells where photosynthesis takes place
chlorophyll main pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants
glucose a monosaccharide sugar that is produced in photosynthesis and used during cellular respiration for energy production
carbon dioxide a gas released during cellular respiration; used by plants during photosynthesis
reactant ingredient in a chemical reaction
Law of Conservation of Mass mass is neither created nor destroyed in ordinary chemical and physical changes
Law of Conservation of Energy energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form into another
cellular respiration the process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients
mitochondria the structure in a cell where cellular respiration takes place
independent variable the one thing a scientist manipulates or tests on purpose during an experiment
dependent variable the results that are measured/observed during an experiment
constants factors during an experiment that are controlled so that they don't affect the dependent variable
carbon cycle the cycling of carbon throughout Earth's spheres
geosphere Earth's rock, minerals, ground
biosphere living or once-living things on Earth
atmosphere air/gas above the surface of Earth)
cryosphere frozen water on Earth
hydrosphere liquid water on Earth
combustion the burning of fossil fuels or other materials
fossil fuel non-renewable resources that release carbon into the atmosphere when burned
nutrients support proper function and growth
carbonation carbon dioxide dissolving in the oceans
decomposition the breakdown of plant and animal matter by decomposers to return nutrients to the soil
product what is made in a chemical reaction
empirical evidence the cumulative body acquired of observation or experimentation in which scientific explanation is based
oxygen a gas released by plants during photosynthesis; used during cellular respiration

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
