Ecosystem One or more communities interacting with the environment
Abiotic parts non-living parts of an ecosystem
Nitrates chemical compounds that contain the element nitrogen. Nitrates are of the most important nutrients in soil.
Nitrogen cycle The reusing of nitrogen in an ecosystem
Evaporate to change from a liquid to a gas
Optimum temperature the temperature at which a living thing can grow best
Succession The series of changes that takes place in a community
Precipitation Water in the air that falls to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
climate the average of factors such as temperature a precipitation over many years
humidity the amount of moisture in the air
landorms mountains, plains, hills, and valleys are examples of landforms
elevation the height above or below sea level
soil crumbling rocks, decaying organisms, air, and water
Fixation the process of converting nitrogen from air into nitrogen containing molecues that plants can use
Nodules A small lump that many organisms live in
Legumes The pod or seed vessel of such a plant
evaporation liquid water changes into water vapor, which is gas.
Lichens are algae and fungi that lives together in a symbiotic relationship
Climax community A community that grows large from high nutrient and water level of the soil.
Biomes A large group of ecosystems which similar types of climate and communities.
Deciduous Stage of growth; not permanent
Taiga Forest of evergreen trees that make up the Taiga
Tundra The Biome of Alaska and Northern Canada
Perma forest the soil of the tundra never completely thaws during short summer, leaving a permanently frozen layer
Plankton tiny, free-floating organism which live near the surface or the shore
Estuaries lower course of a river in which the river's current meets the sea's tide
