Range of Motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Abduction | moving a body part away from the midline |
| Adduction | moving a body part toward the midline |
| Opposition | touching an opposite finger with the thumb |
| Flexion | bending a body part |
| Extension | straightening a body part |
| Hyperextension | excessive straightening of a body part |
| Dorsiflexion | bending the toes and foot up at the ankle |
| Plantar Flexion | bending the foot down at the ankle |
| Rotation | turning a joint |
| Internal Rotation | turning the joint inward |
| External Rotation | turning the joint outward |
| Pronate | turning the joint downward |
| Supinate | turning the joint upward |
| Active Range of Motion AROM | done by the patient |
| Passive Range of Motion PROM | healthcare worker moves the joint |
| Active Assistive Range of Motion AAROM | done by the patient with help from a healthcare worker |
