Microscope and Plant

Part C:

TermDefinition
The roots One of three organs of the plant. Functions: Anchors plants to the ground, collects water from the soil, stores food made by the plant via photosynthesis, contains meristematic tissue at the root caps/tips that allow roots to grow in the ground.
Transpiration
Meristematic tissue Unspecialized cells that can form any other type of cell, and grows new parts of a plant
Epidermal tissue Secretes a waxy cuticle which protects and limits evaporation through the leaf.
Vascular Bundles Contains the xylem and phloem which are the main transporters of the plant.
Phloem Transports food from leaves to roots
Xylem Transports water and minerals to and from roots to the leaves
The stem Supports structure of the plant, transports water
Photosynthesis Process where plants use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy which is glucose.
Palisade tissue contains chloroplasts where photosynthesis occurs
The Leaves Site of photosynthesis and transpiration
Guard cells/stomata cells on the leaf that open up that allows gases of carbon dioxide, oxygen and water to move in and out of leaf
Ground tissue Contains mesophyll tissues which fills in space of the plant and in where the gases are exchanged
Ocular lens Magnifies the image produced by microscope's objective
Objective lens magnifies the specimen by either 4x, 10x, or 40x
