epiglottis small flap of tissue mainly elastic cartilage. fits over the trachea when swallowing to prevent food entering the trachea/lungs
larynx below the pharynx that contains the vocal chords supported by cartilage. sound production as air moves out of the lungs and flows over the vocal chords
trachea tube from phranyx down to two bronchi and supported by C shaped rings of hyaline cartilage. holds the trachea open for air movement preventing collapse
bronchi two tubes act as division of trachea, lined with pseudostratified epithelium. a pathway for air with cartilage rings stop airways collapsing
bronchioles tiny last segments of tube which air passes through before reaching alveoli
alveoli smallest structures at the end of the bronchioles. for rapid exchange of gases by diffusion
pleural membrane covers the outer surface of the whole lung and the internal surface thoracic cavity. produces pleural fluid which acts t o reduce friction as the lungs moves with TC, ensures attached to TC
diaphragm sheet of muscle and tendon which seperates the TC from the abdominal cavity. contracts and relaxes to allow ventilation of the lungs
intercostal muscles skeletal muscles found between the ribs. aids in the movement of the ribs for the ventilation of the lungs (breathing)
