Drilling
Drills, types of holes, tools
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| The pillar drill has what safety precautions | Sectioned off area around drill, Chuck guard, Emergency stop |
| What speeds should be used when drilling | Small drill bit - fast speed, big drill bit - slow speed. Soft material - fast speed, hard material slow speed |
| Name some things that must be done when securing pieces | A piece of wood can be used to support the material. Tightly tightening vice will prevent piece from pulling out. Use a vee-block to secured round pieces |
| What are the parts of the drill bit | Shank (Straight/Taper), Neck, flutes, land, cutting edge |
| What is a drill drift used for | Removing drill bits, reamers and morse taper sleeves from the spindle. |
| What are morse taper sleeves | They are used when the taper of the shank is too small to fit in the drilling machine. Used in lathes a lot |
| Why do we drill pilot holes | Used to guide a larger drill bit and allows the bigger drill bit to cut. |
| What is a tapping size hole | This is a hole drilled prior to cutting internal threads into a piece. It is drilled smaller to allow the tap to CUT the threads into the piece. |
| What size hole is needed to cut M4 threads | 3.3mm |
| What is special about a clearance hole | A clearance hole is drilled slightly larger than the bolt that is going in it to allow the bolt to move freely through the hole. |
| What is a machine that can make a blind hole | A lathe |
| What is countersinking | It is when the mouth of a hole is enlarged so a counter sunk screw will fit flush |
| Counterboring allows the head of a bolt to fit flush. How is this done | By making the upper diameter of the hole bigger |
| What is the benefit of spot facing | It makes the surface uneven letting the head of a bolt fit flush |
| What do reamers do | The finish the inside of a hole accurately and smoothly |
