Cellular Reproduction

TermDefinition
Asexual Reproduction process in which a cell makes an exact copy of itself
Sexual Reproduction process in which two parents combine genetic information to produce offspring with new and unique combinations of both parents’ traits
Binary Fission a type of asexual reproduction in which a prokaryote duplicates its DNA, divides in half, and produces two identical daughter cells
Mitosis part of the eukaryotic cell cycle in which the cell nucleus divides and creates two identical daughter cells
Meiosis part of eukaryotic cell cycle where cells produce new cells that are genetically dissimilar from the parent cell, only occurs in organisms who reproduce sexually
Genes a unit of DNA that codes for a specific trait
Diploid term used to refer to a cell that contains both sets of homologous chromosomes
Haploid term used to refer to a cell that contains only a single set of chromosomes and therefore only a single set of genes
Karyotype snapshot of the pairs of chromosomes contained within a cell of an organism
Cytokinesis the process of a cell splitting into two cells, thus dividing the cytoplasm
