Inherited Traits

TermDefinition
Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment.
Artificial selection The process by which humans breed plants and animals for desired traits.
Asexual reproduction A type of reproduction involving only one parent, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent.
Mutation A change in an organism’s DNA that can lead to variations in traits.
Natural selection A process in which organisms with beneficial traits survive and reproduce more successfully, leading to changes in the population over time.
Sexual reproduction A type of reproduction that involves two parents and produces genetically diverse offspring.
Traits A characteristic or feature of an organism, such as eye color or leaf shape.
Genetic Diversity Variations in genetic information among individuals of a population, which increases the chances of survival in a changing environment.
Generation a succession of birth cohorts; it is essentially the average period during which offspring are born, develop and mature, and then have offspring of their own.
Offspring he young creation of living organisms, produced either by a single organism or, in the case of sexual reproduction, two organisms.
Organism A living thing, such as a plant, animal, or microorganism.
Environment The surroundings in which an organism lives, including both living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) factors.
Reproduction The biological process by which new organisms are produced.
Heredity The passing of genetic traits from parents to offspring.
Gene A section of DNA that carries instructions for a specific trait.
Chromosome A structure within cells that contains DNA and genes.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) The molecule that carries genetic instructions in living organisms.
Variation Differences in traits among individuals in a population.
Survival of the Fittest The idea that individuals with the most advantageous traits are more likely to survive and pass on their genes.
Evolution The gradual change in a species over time due to natural selection and genetic variation.
Population A group of organisms of the same species living in a particular area.
Species A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Biodiversity The variety of living organisms in an ecosystem, important for stability and resilience.
Cloning The process of making an identical genetic copy of an organism.
Hybrid The offspring of two different species or varieties with mixed traits.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
