Unit 04 25-26
Changes in Motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Balanced forces | equal and opposite forces on an object that result in no change in position, direction, or motion; combined net force equals zero |
| Net force | the combination of all forces acting on an object |
| Newton’s First Law of Motion | an object will remain in its current state of motion or at rest unless an outside net force acts on it |
| Unbalanced forces | unequal forces acting on an object that may result in a change in position, direction, or motion; combined net force does not equal zero (greater than zero) |
| Acceleration | the change in the velocity vector in a time interval, divided by the time interval. |
| Force | a vector quantity (a quantity that has both magnitude and direction). |
| Friction | force that resists the sliding or rolling of one solid object over another. |
| Gravity | the universal force of attraction acting between all matter. |
| Momentum | "mass in motion." All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum |
| Motion | change with time of the position or orientation of a body |
| Newtons | a unit of force that will accelerate one kilogram of mass one meter per second squared. |
