| Atom | the basic unit of matter that cannot be broken down by chemical means |
| Proton | subatomic particle located within the nucleus, has a positive charge |
| Neutron | subatomic particle located within the nucleus, has a neutral charge |
| Electron | subatomic particle located moving around the nucleus, has a negative charge |
| Element | pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
| Compound | substance made up of two or more different elements |
| Ionic Bond | bond formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another |
| Covalent Bond | bond formed by the sharing of electrons between atoms |
| Molecule | a group of atoms held together by covalent bonds |
| Carbohydrate | compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms; major source of energy for organisms |
| Lipids | molecule made mainly from carbon and hydrogen atoms; includes fats, oils, and waxes |
| Nucleic Acid | large molecule containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus; main component of DNA and RNA, main functions are information storage, energy transfers, and protein synthesis |
