Ecology & Human Impact
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecology | the study of how living things interact with each other and their environment |
| Population | a group of individuals of the same species in a given time in a given area |
| Community | all the different populations in an area |
| Ecosystem | a community of organism and their abiotic environment |
| Biome | a group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms |
| Biosphere | everywhere on Earth where life exists |
| Herbivore | a consumer that eats only plants |
| Carnivore | a consumer that eats only animals |
| Omnivore | a consumer that eats plants and animals |
| Consumer/heterotroph | an organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Producer/autotroph | an organism that can make its own food |
| Predator | an animal that hunts other animals for food |
| Prey | an organism that is killed and eaten by predators |
| Scavenger | a carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead animals |
| Abiotic | never living |
| Biotic | living or once living |
| Food Chain | Series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten- shows ONE feeding pattern in an ecosystem |
| Food Web | shows all the feeding relationships in an ecosystem- consists of many food chains |
| Niche | an organism's role or job in an ecosystem |
| habitat | where an organism lives |
| Limiting factor | factor that affects the growth of a population |
| Energy pyramid | A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web |
| Carrying Capacity | Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support |
| Species | A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Ecological Succession | gradual change in living communities that follows a disturbance |
| Global Climate Change | a change in global or regional climate patterns, attributed to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. |
| Ozone Depletion | The breakdown of the ozone layer caused by the buildup of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the atmosphere |
| Deforestation | The removal of trees faster than forests can replace themselves. |
| Biodiversity | the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. |
| Acid Rain | rain containing nitric and sulfuric acids |
| Invasive Species | non-native species that enter new habitats and rapidly multiply, outcompeting native species |
| Pollution | release of harmful chemicals into the environment |
| Problems causes by pollution | biomagnification, acid rain, ozone depletion |
| Biomagnification | accumulation of pollutants at successive levels of the food chain |
| Biological Control | the intentional release of a natural enemy to attack a pest population |
| Pesticide | a chemical used to kill pests (as rodents or insects) |
| Symbiotic Relationship | The relationship between two species that live in close association with each other |
| Mutualism | A relationship between two species in which both species benefit |
| Parasitism | A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed |
| Commensalism | A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected |
| Trade-off | the act of giving up one benefit in order to gain another, greater benefit |
