Biology Part C

Mitosis

QuestionAnswer
How many parts are there to interphase? There are 3 and they are: The growth phase, the synthesis phase, and the second growth phase
What is the Growth phase? It is the first stage of the cell cycle where the cell is growing and developing its organelles
What is the Synthesis Phase? It is the second phase of the cell cycle where the chromosomes replicate in the nucleus (duplicate)
What is Mitosis? the process of the nucleus splitting in two
What is Prophase? the first stage of mitosis where centrioles move to opposite poles, the nucleus envelope disappears, and chromosomes coil up into visible structures
What is metaphase? the second phase of mitosis where spindle fibers attach on to the chromosomes and line them up in the middle
What is anaphase? Third part of mitosis where spindle fibers retract and pull half the chromosomes toward each centriole
What is Telophase? Fourth phase of mitosis where spindle fibers are back in the centrioles and the nucleus envelope starts to form back around both sets of chromosomes
What is Cytokinesis? Fifth phase of mitosis where cell membrane pinched off in the middle and separated into 2 daughter cells (identical)
What are Cell check points? there are 3 main points on the cell cycle where proteins determine wether the cell should divide or not and if the cell does not pass the signal check its repaired or destroyed.
What is apoptosis? when cells die because they are too old to function (lysosomes does it to them)
What are cancer cells? cells that can undergo mitosis an unlimited number of times
What is a tumor? cells that clump together due to an uncontrollable urge to divide. They never die on their own and they do not function normally because its DNA has become mutated by genetics, smoking, or etc.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
