Mitosis

Part C

QuestionAnswer
What happens during interphase? 1. 1st Growth Phase: Cell grows and develops its organelles. 2. Synthesis: The chromosomes replicate (double) in the nucleus.
What happens during prophase? Centrioles move to opposite poled and chromosomes coil up.
What happens during metaphase? Spindle fibers attach to centromere and line chromosomes in the middle.
What happens during anaphase? Spindle fibers retract and pull half of the chromosones towards each centriole.
What happens during telophase? Spindle fibers are back in the centrioles, nuclear envelopes start to form around both sets of chromosomes which become chromatin.
What is mitosis? When the nucleus divides.
What are the cell checkpoints? The DNA strands must not be replicated or damaged. If there is a lack of nutrients or if the spindle fibers do not move to opposite poles during anaphase, the cell is destroyed.
When does cytokinesis occur and what is it? It occurs when the cell divides. The cell membrane pinches of in the middle and forms
What is apoptosis? Cells die when it is too old to function because of the lysosomes.
What are cancer cells? Cells that can undergo mitosis an unlimited number of times and do not die on their own.
What are tumors? Cells that clump together due to an uncontrollable urge to divide.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
