Cells and Diffusion

Part A

TermDefinition
Nucleus Control all activities of the cell, growth and reproduction (in both animal and plant cell)
Cell membrane Allows certain molecules to go in and out. Molecules diffuse in or out of cell. Made up of 2 phosphorous layer interconnected. (in both animal and plant cell)
Cell Wall Supports and protects the cell; does not allow molecules in or out. (in plant cell)
Chromosomes Protiens that contain DNA which has information for making molecules. (in both animal and plant cell)
Rough endoplasmic reticulum produces and store protein. (in both animal and plant cell)
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces and store fats and oils. (in both animal and plant cell)
Golgi bodies Modifies and packages proteins from rough ER with enzymes. (in both animal and plant cell)
Ribosomes Helps rough ER make protein; is attached to Rough ER. (in both animal and plant cell)
Centrioles Helps with cell division (Mitosis), spindle fibre comes from here. (animal cell)
Mitochondria Convert sugar into energy for the cell . (in both animal and plant cell)
Cytoplasm Fluid in the cells; allows organelles to move around. (in both animal and plant cell)
Vacuoles Sores water, minerals, vitamins. Much bigger in plant cells. (in both animal and plant cell)
Lysosomes Breaks down food and bacteria, organelles. Kills bacteria that are harmful. (in animal cell)
Chloroplast Uses sunlight to makes its own food. Photosynthesis = co2 + h2o + light = sugar + o2 (in plant cell)
Diffusion Movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration.
Osmosis Osmosis is a type of diffusion specifically for water molecules moving across a semi-permeable membrane. Movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration.
Permeable Allows any molecules to diffuse across the membrane
Semi - Permeable Allows some molecules to diffuse across the membrane
Non - permeable Allows no molecules to diffuse across the membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
