Cells and Diffusion

Part A:

TermDefinition
Nucleus In both cells, like the brain of the cell, controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction
Cell Membrane In both cells, like a filter, Allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell Molecules diffuse in or out of a cell made up of 2 Phosphorus layers interconnected
Cell Wall In plant cells, like a brick wall Supports and protects the cell; does not allow molecules in or out at all
Chromosomes In both cells, like DNA Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum In both, like a factory Produces and stores proteins
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum In both cells, like a factory Produces and stores fats and oils
Golgi Bodies In both cells, Kind of like a repackaging system Modifies and packages proteins from the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum with enzymes
Ribosomes In both cells, like the guy operating the factory Helps Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum make proteins Is attached to the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Cebtruikes In animal cells, like a spider web Help with cell division (mitosis) Spindle fibers come from centrioles
Mitochandria In both cells, like the powerhouse of the cell Converts sugar into energy for the cell
Cytoplasm In both cells, like a pool of water Fluid in the cell; allows organelles to move around
Vacuole In both cells, like a water tower Stores water, minerals and vitamins Much bigger in plant cells
Lysosomes In animal cells, like an executioner or garbage man Breaks down food, invading bacteria and old-damaged organelles
Cloropasts In plant cells, like a solar panel Uses sunlight to make its own food Photosynthesis CO2+H2O+Light -->Sugar_O2
Diffusion Particles moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Osmosis Diffusion but with water
Permeable Allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane
Semi-Permeable Allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane Ex, Cell Membrane
Non-Permeable Allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane Ex. Cell Wall

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
