When does stage 3 of the menstrual cycle occur? Day 14
What period does stage 4 of the menstrual cycle occur from? Days 14-28
What 4 hormones control the menstrual cycle? FSH, Oestrogen, LH and Progesterone
Where is FSH produced? Pituitary gland
What 2 things does FSH do? 1. Causes egg to mature 2. Stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen
Where is oestrogen produced? The ovaries
What 2 things does oestrogen do? 1. Causes lining of uterus to grow 2. Stimulates release of LH
Where is LH produced? Pituitary gland
What does LH do? Stimulates release of an egg
Where is progesterone produced? The ovaries
What 2 things does progesterone do? 1. Maintains lining of uterus during second half of the cycle 2. Prevents release of LH and FSH
What is the more scientific name for an egg? Ovum
What is an embryo called in the later stages of pregnancy? A fetus
What does the placenta do? Allows the blood of mother and embryo to get very close, allowing exchange of food, oxygen and waste
What is the amnion membrane full of? Amniotic fluid
What does amniotic fluid do? Protect the embryo from knocks and bumps
