PRACTICAL: Investigating seed germination

QuestionAnswer
What 5 pieces of apparatus do you need for this experiment? 1. Test tubes 2. Test tube holder 3. Cress seeds 4. Cotton wool 5. Fridge
What do we put in each of the 4 test tubes to start this experiment? 10 seeds on some cotton wool
Describe how each individual test tube should be set up 1. Leave cotton wool dry 2. Add water to cotton to make it moist 3. Add water to cover cotton wool, then put a layer of oil on top 4. Add water to cotton wool to make moist, then place it in the fridge
How long should the test tubes be left? 3-5 days
What must be measured at the end of the experiment? How many seeds germinated
What are we changing in this experiment? The abiotic conditions for the seeds
What 2 things must be kept the same in this experiment? 1. The temperature of the tubes not in the fridge 2. The type of water used
What about the seeds must we control? Make sure they all come from the same parent plant
Which set of seeds will be the only set to germinate? Those with all conditions present
What does this experiment prove? Germination only occurs when ALL conditions are correct
