Are gametes diploid or haploid cells? Haploid
What does haploid mean? The cell has half the number of chromosomes as a normal cell (23)
What is it called when a male gamete fuses with a female gamete? Fertilisation
What is formed when two gametes fuse? A zygote
What does a zygote develop into after undergoing mitosis? An embryo
Which parent's genes are inherited in sexual reproduction? A mixture of both
How many divisions occur in meiosis? 2
What is produced as a result of meiosis? 4 haploid cells
Are cells produced my mitosis identical? No
What does the cell do before it starts to divide by meisis? It duplicates it's DNA
What is the name of the female reproductive structures in a flower? The Carpel
What is the name of the male reproductive structures in a flower? The Stamen
What does the stamen consist of? The anther and the filament
What does the carpel consist of? The stigma, the style and the ovary
What does the anther do? Produce pollen grains
What does the filament do? Acts as the stalk to support the anther
What does the stigma do? The sticky tip that pollen attaches to
What does the style do? Acts as the stalk to hold up the stigma. The pollen tube will eventually grow down the style
What does the ovary do? Contains the ovules
What are the ovules in a plant? The female gamete
What are the two neutral parts of the flower The sepal and the petal
What does the petal do? Attracts insects
What does the sepal do? Outer green part of the flower that encloses flower bud whilst it develops
In what 3 ways are some plants adapted for insect pollination? 1. Brightly coloured petals 2. Scented flowers 3. They make big, sticky pollen grains that stick to insects
In what 3 ways are some plants adapted for wind pollination? 1. A lot of small, light pollen grains 2. Long filaments to hang anthers outside the flower 3. Large, feathery stigma to catch pollen as it's carried by the wind
