Homeostasis
A&P Ch 2 PCP310
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Homeostasis | Self-regulating process by which a living organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions ie. regulating blood pH levels |
| Sensor Mechanism | Specific sensors detect and react to any changes away from the normal |
| Integrating Mechanism (control centre) | information changes are analyzed and integrated and then if needed, a specific action is initiated |
| Effector Mechanism | Effectors directly influence controlled physiological variables |
| Feedback | Process of information about a variable constantly flowing back from the sensor to the integrator |
| Negative Feedback | Produces action opposite to the change that activated the system to maintain homeostasis |
| Postive Feedback | Amplifies or reinforces the change that is activated to disrupt homeostasis |
| Intracellular Control | Regulation within a cell using genes and enzymes |
| Intrinsic Control | Regulation within tissues and organs that may involve chemical signals |
| Extrinsic Control | Regulation from organ to organ that may involve nerve or endocrine signals |
