Cells & Diffusion
Gr 10 Biology (Part A)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all activities s of the cell; growth and reproduction. |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell. Its molecules diffuse in or out of a cell, and it is make up of 2 phospholipid layers interconnected. |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell; does not allow molecule in or out. |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded info for making molecules. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores proteins. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores fats and oils. |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from rough ER with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | Attached to rough ER and helps it make proteins. |
| Centrioles | Helps with cell division (mitosis) and spindle fibres come from here. |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy for the cell. |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid in cell that allows organelles to move around. Separates cell membrane and the nucleus. Includes cytosol, organelles, life-supporting materials such as sugar & water. |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, and old/damaged organelles. |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals & vitamins; much bigger in plant cells. |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food (photosynthesis). |
| Diffusion | The movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration. |
| Osmosis | The movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from a high concentration of water to low concentration of water. |
| Permeable | Allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane. |
| Semi-permeable | Allows certain molecule to diffuse across membrane. (ex. skin) |
| Non-permeable | Allows no molecule to diffuse across membrane. (ex. cell wall) |
| What is the equation for chloroplast? | CO2 + H20 + light --> sugar + O2 |
