| arm | supports the eyepiece, nosepiece and objective lenses |
| eyepiece | contains the magnifying lens through which you look |
| nosepiece | holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to change magnification of the specimen being viewed |
| objective lenses | low-powered, medium-powered and high-powered lenses |
| stage clips | holds slide in place |
| stage | supports slide being viewed |
| diaphragm | regulates the amount of light through the specimen, objective lenses and eyepiece |
| Light/Mirror | projects light upward through the diaphragm, specimen and lenses |
| Base | supports the microscope |
| Fine Focus Knob | moves the stage slightly to sharpen the image |
| coarse focus knob | moves the stage up and down for focusing |
| slide | flat thin piece of glass used to hold specimens for examination under a microscope |
| cover slip | small piece of glass or plastic to be placed on top of specimen samples for flattening and protection to look at under a microscope |
| specimen | a sample of an item (usually organic) to examine under magnification |
| microscope | an optical instrument used for viewing very small objects like cells; can magnify objects several hundred times. |
