Evolution LS4-1

TermDefinition
amino acid sequencing Determining the order of amino acids in a protein molecule.
analogous structure Structures in different species that have similar functions but evolved independently, often due to similar environmental pressures.
anatomy The study of the structure and organization of living organisms.
biochemical evidence Evidence of evolutionary relationships based on similarities in biochemical molecules, such as DNA, proteins, and metabolic pathways.
biogeography The study of the distribution of species and ecosystems in geographic space and through geological time.
cladogram A diagram showing evolutionary relationships among a group of organisms, based on shared derived characteristics.
common ancestry The idea that all living organisms are descended from a single common ancestor.
comparative anatomy The study of similarities and differences in the structure of living organisms.
descent with modification The principle that species change over time through the process of natural selection, resulting in the evolution of new species.
DNA sequencing Determining the precise order of nucleotides in a DNA molecule.
electrophoresis A laboratory technique used to separate macromolecules based on their size and charge.
embryo An early stage in the development of a multicellular organism.
embryology The study of the development of embryos from fertilization to birth.
evolution The process of change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.
evolutionary tree A diagram illustrating the evolutionary relationships among a group of organisms.
fossil record The total collection of fossils discovered and studied, providing evidence of the history of life on Earth.
heritable trait A characteristic that is genetically determined and can be passed from one generation to the next.
homologous structure Structures in different species that are derived from a common ancestor and share a similar underlying structure.
homology Similarity in structure or function due to common ancestry.
natural selection The process by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more successfully.
paleontology The scientific study of fossils to understand the history of life on Earth.
phenotypic similarity Similarity in observable traits among different organisms.
phylogenetic tree A diagram depicting the evolutionary relationships among a group of organisms.
phylogeny The evolutionary history of a group of organisms.
sedimentary layers Layers of sedimentary rock that accumulate over time, providing a record of past environments and the organisms that lived in them.
species A group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.
vestigial structure A structure that has lost most or all of its ancestral function in a species but is retained during evolution.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
