Fluid Mechanics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| viscous flows | significant frictional effects |
| inviscid flow region | regions (typically not close to solid surfaces) where viscous forces are negligibly small compared to inertial or pressure forces |
| external flow | an unbounded fluid over a surface |
| internal flow | flow bounded by solid surfaces |
| incompressible flow | the density of flowing fluid remains nearly constant over time and throughout space regardless of pressure (e.g. liquid flow) |
| compressible flow | the density of fluid changes during flow (e.g. high-speed gas flow) |
| laminar flow | highly ordered fluid motion characterized by smooth layers of fluid (e.g. high-viscosity oil flow) |
