light's interaction
with matter (science)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Reflect | light bounces off a surface without being absorbed |
| Refraction | light passes from one medium to another (e.g., air to water) and changes direction due to the change in speed. |
| Transmit | allow it to pass through a substance without being absorbed or reflected. |
| Absorb | taken in by a substance rather than being reflected or transmitted |
| Emit | process of giving off light |
| Scatter | light is dispersed or spread out in various directions as it encounters particles or irregularities in a medium. |
| Translucent | allows some light to pass through, but it scatters the light in many directions, making objects on the other side difficult to see clearly. |
| Transparent | allow light to pass through them with minimal scattering, so objects can be seen clearly on the other side. |
| Opaque | Opaque materials do not allow light to pass through them; instead, they absorb or reflect light. |
