8th gr Global Influences on Climate

| atmosphere | a mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth |
| carbon dioxide | Earth’s most important greenhouse gas that prevents the Earth from radiating all of its heat back into space |
| greenhouse gases | gases that trap heat in the atmosphere |
| carbon footprint | a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc. |
| cellular respiration | a metabolic pathway that uses glucose to produce energy |
| photosynthesis | absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and release O2 into the air |
| deforestation | the purposeful clearing of forests; cutting down forests to create farmland, for lumber, etc. |
| heatwaves | a period of abnormally hot weather generally lasting more than two days |
| droughts | a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water |
| urbanization | the increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities; occurs because people move from rural areas to urban areas |
