waves a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another; do NOT transfer matter ONLY energy
transverse waves waves where the particles in the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the energy
electromagnetic waves transverse waves or light waves that travel through both empty space and matter
medium the matter that carries the wave; solid, liquid, or gas
wavelength the distance between the same point on waves next to each other; like crest to crest or trough to trough
amplitude the maximum distance moved by a point on a wave measured from its position if there were no wave.
frequency the number of waves that pass a fixed point in unit time
crest the highest point of a wave
trough the lowest point of a wave
electromagnetic spectrum the range of all types of electromagnetic radiation
