8th Force & Motion
Term | Definition |
---|---|
force | the push or pull on matter that enables that matter to CHANGE in motion (aka: accelerate) and interact; always present even when an object is not moving (balanced) |
net force | the sum of all the forces acting on an object |
unbalanced forces | change the motion of an object; net force ≠0 |
balanced forces | do not change the motion of an object; net force =0 |
acceleration | ANY change in motion; can be in direction or speed; slowing down is considered acceleration as it is a change in speed |
Newton’s First Law/Law of Inertia | objects will remain at rest OR in constant motion UNLESS acted on by an unbalanced force |
inertia | RESISTANCE to change in motion |
friction | RESISTANCE to motion against an object |
Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion/Law of Action-Reaction | for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction; forces ALWAYS occur in pairs that are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction |
Newton’s 2nd Law/Law of Mass and Acceleration | acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the NET FORCE acting upon the object and the MASS of the object |
