| DNA | complex molecule that contains all of the information necessary to build and maintain an organism; genetic material |
| traits | specific characteristics determined by genes |
| genes | small sections of the DNA that code for traits |
| heredity | the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring |
| asexual reproduction | one parent produces offspring, genetically identical to parent; uniform offspring |
| sexual reproduction | requires 2 gametes (male and female sex cells); produce offspring genetically diverse; they are not completely like either parent |
| genetic variation | the difference in DNA among individuals or the differences between populations among the same species |
| artificial selection | when people (instead of nature) select which organisms get to reproduce based on a desired trait; selective breeding |
| natural selection | process in which organisms that are better suited for an environment tend to survive and reproduce |
| adaptation | is a trait that improves an organism’s ability to survive in its environment |
| offspring | child or young of a particular parent |
