| Term | Definition |

| Natural hazard | A hazardous event that causes unacceptably large numbers of fatalities |
| Natural disaster | the negative impact following an actual occurrence of natural hazard in the event that it significantly harms a community |
| Earthquake | the sudden release of strain energy in the Earth's crust, resulting in waves of shaking that radiate outwards from the earthquake source |
| Tsunami | a series of extremely long waves caused by a large and sudden displacement of the ocean, usually the result of an earthquake below or near the ocean floor |
| Volcano | an opening in the earth's crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape |
| Flooding | An overflow of water onto normally dry land |
