producers Autotrophs that are the foundation of food webs; trophic level 1
primary consumers organisms that eat producers for energy; herbivores
secondary consumers eat primary consumers for energy; are carnivores or omnivores
tertiary consumers obtain their energy by eating primary and secondary consumers; carnivores or omnivores
heterotrophs they get their energy by consuming (eating) another organisms
trophic level a level or a position in a food chain, a food web, or an energy pyramid
energy pyramid a graphical representation that illustrates the flow of energy through different trophic levels in an ecosystem from the most energy (producers) to the least (tertiary consumers)
10% rule only 10% of energy is passed on from one trophic level to the next in an ecosystem
autotrophs make their own food by transforming light energy from the sun, carbon dioxide, and water; photosynthesis
nutrients a substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life; minerals, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc
biosphere the part of the Earth that can support life; includes all living things and the places they are found
