Weather Patt Vocab

TermDefinition
global winds winds caused by the unequal heating between the poles and equator, travel thousands of kilometers in steady patterns, and can last for weeks
monsoons winds that change direction with the seasons
condensation the process by which a gas, such as water vapor, changes into a liquid. This occurs when moist air cools
dew point the temperature at which air with a given amount of water vapor will reach saturation
air pressure the force of air molecules pushing on an area
saturation a condition in which the rates of evaporation and condensation are equal (because the air is holding as much water vapor as it can; it is “full”).
acid rain rain that has become much more acidic than normal because of pollution
sleet when rain passes through a layer of cold air, it can freeze before hitting the ground and form small pellets of ice
weather the condition of the Earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place
freezing rain when raindrops freeze as they hit the ground or other surfaces in cold weather and covers surfaces with a coating of ice
barometer any instrument that measures air pressure
hail lumps or balls of ice that fall from cumulonimbus clouds
evaporation the process by which a liquid changes into a gas as it receives “extra energy"
humidity the amount of water vapor in air
Coriolis Effect the influence of Earth’s rotation
jet streams long-distance winds that usually flow in the upper troposphere from west to east for thousands of kilometers at speeds greater than 200 km/hr (124 mi/hr).
relative humidity compares the amount of water vapor in air with the maximum amount of water vapor that can be present at that temperature
wind air that moves horizontally, or parallel to the ground
precipitation any type of liquid or solid water that falls to Earth’s surface
local winds these winds, such as the land breezes and sea breezes that are caused by the unequal heating between land and water, change daily in regular patterns and blow within small areas

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
