Grade 6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atoms | particles that all matter is made up of; the basic unit of a chemical element |
| Molecule | two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds |
| Element | a substance in which all atoms have the same identity |
| Solid | a state of matter with a definite shape and volume |
| Liquid | a state of matter with a defined volume, but no fixed shape |
| Gas | a state of matter with no definite volume or shape |
| Synthetic | something made by a chemical process or reaction |
| Chemical process | process of reorganizing atoms by breaking one set of chemical bonds and forming a new set i |
| Synthesis | construction of complex chemical compounds from simpler ones |
| Plastic | a group of materials, either synthetic or naturally occurring, that may be shaped when soft and then hardened to retain the given shape |
| Polymerization | process to create polymers |
| Natural fibers | fibers that are produced by geological processes, or from the bodies of plants or animals |
| Mass | measurement of the amount of matter in an object |
| Volume | the amount of space the object takes up |
| Density | measurement of how tightly a material is packed together (mass per unit of volume) |
| Irregular solid | a three-dimensional solid object that does not have an normal shape |
| Regular solid | 3 dimensional polygons whose sides are all of equal length and whose angles are all equal |
| Units for density | kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³) |
| Formula for finding density | mass divided by volume |
