7th Changing Earth
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| superposition | layers of rock are dated by oldest on bottom and youngest on top |
| plate tectonics | theory that explains how the surface of the Earth changes |
| seafloor spreading | New ocean floor is created at a mid–ocean ridge as two tectonic plates move away from one another; older crust near continent |
| divergent boundary | The lithospheric plates are moving away from each other. |
| rift valley | a lowland region that forms where Earth's tectonic plates move apart. |
| mid ocean ridges | a long underwater mountain range formed when two tectonic plates move or pull apart from each other |
| convergent boundary | A boundary where two pieces of the Earth’s crust are colliding. |
| subduction zone | Occurs at convergent plate boundaries; the process where one plate slides under another. |
| ocean trench | long, narrow depressions on the seafloor that form at the boundary of tectonic plates where one plate is pushed beneath another |
| transform boundary | The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past one another. |
| plate tectonics | scientific theory that explains how major landforms are created as a result of Earth's plates moving |
| continental crust | thick part of the Earth's crust that forms the large landmasses |
| fault | A crack within the Earth’s rocky crust. |
| oceanic crust | thin part of Earth’s crust found under the oceans |
| hot spot | an area of the Earth's mantle from which hot plumes rise upward, forming volcanoes on the overlying crust |
| supervolcano | arge volcano having the potential to produce an eruption with major effects on the global climate and ecosystem |
