Adaptations

5th Grade Science - plant & animal structures & functions

TermDefinition
adaption Traits, characteristics or behaviors that help a plant or animal survive in its environment.
learned adaption A behavior that is learned from the species parents, such as how a dolphin hunts/fishes for food which is taught by the mother.
camouflage A traits that some living organisms use to hide themselves from predators or danger.
food chain Where one living organism eats another organism, and later that organism is consumed by another larger organism in an ecosystem.
migration A behavior adaptation of many different animals when they move from one place to another to avoid cold weather or find new food source.
mimcry A behavioral adaptation where an organism imitates or acts like another more scary species in order to ward or predators or danger.
carnivore An animal that feeds off only meat, such as wolves and mountain lions.
omnivore An animal that lives off both meat and vegetables, such as humans and dogs.
herbivore An animal that only eat plants and vegetables, such as horses, cows and squirrels.
prey an animal that is hunted or killed by another animal for food.
predator an organism that captures and eats another.
consumer An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on other organisms or organic matter due to lack of the ability to manufacture own food from inorganic sources; aslso known as a heterotroph.
producer a producer is an organism that creates its own food or energy, also known as autotrophs. They are the foundation of a food chain.
hibernation a state of greatly reduced metabolic activity and lowered body temperature adopted by certain mammals as an adaptation to survive during super cold weather when food is also scarce.
