equator the imaginary line at 0 degrees latitude that divides Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres
Northern hemisphere the half of the Earth that is north of the equator
axis imaginary line that runs through the Earth's center from the North Pole to the South Pole and the Earth spins around it
rotate to move in a circle around an axis or center; the earth takes 24 hours to make one rotation around its axis
revolve move in a circular orbit around another object; the orbit of the Earth around the sun takes 365.25 days for one revolution
high tide the ocean water reaches its highest level; 2 happen everyday
low tide when the ocean water reaches its lowest level; 2 happen everyday
spring tides occur during new and full moon when the moon, Earth, and Sun align in a straight line; result in higher high tides and lower low tides
neap tides occur during 1st and 3rd quarter when the moon, Earth, and Sun are at 90 degree angles; results in lower high tides and higher low tides
tilt the angle a planet's rotation axis makes with the plane of its orbit.; Earth is currently tilted 23.5° from this plane
Southern hemisphere the half of the Earth that is south of the equator
