| adaptation | A characteristic that improves an organism's ability to survive & reproduce in an environment. |
| evolution | The process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arise. |
| fossil record | A historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the earth. |
| fossil | A preserved remnant or impression of an organism that lived in the past most commonly found in sedimentary rock. |
| natural selection | Process where individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive & reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals; a theory that explains mechanisms of evolution. |
| speciation | Formation of new species as a result of evolution. |
| relative dating | Any method of determining whether an event or object is older or younger than other events or objects; often uses rock layer placement for determination. |
| absolute dating | Any method of measuring the age of an event or object in years. |
| mutations | A change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA; can be good, bad or neutral. |
| variations | Every individual has its own combination of inherited traits. |
| Charles Darwin | Naturalist who first identified evolution as the driving force of change in organisms in the 1850's. |
| selective breeding | Human practice of breeding animals with desired traits. |
| camouflage | A structural adaptation that enables an organism to blend in with its environment. |
| extinction | Describes a species that no longer has any known living individuals. |
| Species | A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| vestigial structures | remnant of a structure that may have had an important function in a species' ancestors, but has no clear function in the modern species. |
