TermDefinition
structure Also known as anatomy. It is the arrangement or organisation of a part of the human body.
function Also known as physiology. It is the way in which a living organism or bodily part works and the process it carries out.
cell the smallest living unit of an organism, which is typically microscopic.
tissue A group of specialised cells and their products.
organ a self-contained group of tissues that performs a specific function in the body.
organ system a group of organs that work together to perform a certain function in the body
artery A tube that carries blood away from the heart
blood The fluid pumped by the heart around the circulatory system It carries oxygen and nutrients to cells, and removes wastes. It also spreads heat to maintain body temperature.
plasma A blood component made of water with dissolved nutrients and wastes
blood vessel Any tube that blood flows through
capillary A tiny blood vessel where substances pass to and from the blood.
circulatory system The body system that moves blood throughout the body Its function is to transport oxygen, nutrients, wastes, hormones, and heat around the body.
heart A muscular organ that pumps blood around the body
left atrium A heart chamber that receives blood from the lungs
left ventricle A heart chamber with thick walls that pumps blood to the body
platelet A blood component that helps form clots to stop bleeding
red blood cell A blood component that transports oxygen
right atrium A heart chamber that receives blood from the body
right ventricle A heart chamber with thick walls that pumps blood to the lungs
vein A tube that carries blood back to the heart.
white blood cell A blood component that helps protect the body from infection
heart valve Close off parts of the heart, preventing the blood from flowing backward.
