TermDefinition
habitat restoration The process of repairing or restoring damaged habitats to their original condition
Haploid Referring to cells or organisms with one set of chromosomes
Heredity The passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring
Heritable Capable of being passed from one generation to the next
heritable trait A trait that is determined by genes and can be passed from parents to offspring
Heterotroph An organism that obtains energy by consuming other organisms
Heterozygous Having two different alleles for a particular gene
homologous chromosome Two chromosomes that are similar in shape and carry genes for the same traits, one inherited from each parent
homologous structure Similar structures in different organisms, indicating a common evolutionary origin
Homology The similarity in structure or function between different species due to shared ancestry
Homozygous Having two identical alleles for a particular gene
human impact The influence of human activities on the environment and ecosystems
human population growth The increase in the number of individuals in the human population over time
Hydrocarbon A compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms, often found in fossil fuels
hydrogen (H) The lightest and most abundant chemical element, found in water and organic compounds
hydrogen bond A weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and an electronegative atom
Hydrosphere The combined mass of water found on, under, and above the surface of a planet
incomplete dominance A genetic phenomenon where the heterozygous phenotype is intermediate between the two homozygous phenotypes
independent assortment The random distribution of alleles for different genes during gamete formation
Inherited Passed down from parents to offspring through genetic transmission
Input The materials or resources used as inputs in a process or system
Insertion A mutation where one or more nucleotides are inserted into a DNA sequence
Interphase The phase of the cell cycle between cell divisions, where the cell grows and prepares for division
invasive species A non-native species that spreads and harms the native ecosystem
Iterative Repetitive or recurring, often involving a series of steps or cycles
Karyotype A picture of an individual's chromosomes, arranged by size and shape
Krebs cycle A series of chemical reactions in cells that produce energy from carbohydrates
lactic acid A byproduct of anaerobic respiration in animals, causing muscle fatigue
lactic acid fermentation The process of producing lactic acid from glucose in the absence of oxygen
Light-dependent Requiring light to occur, such as the reactions in photosynthesis that use light energy
Light-independent Not requiring light to occur, such as the reactions in photosynthesis that do not use light energy
limited resources Resources that are scarce or limited in supply
limiting factor An environmental factor that limits the growth or distribution of a population
limiting resource A resource whose scarcity limits the growth or distribution of a population
Lipid A type of organic compound including fats, oils, and phospholipids, important for energy storage and cell structure
logistic growth A type of population growth that slows and stabilizes as resources become limited

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
