Cell Organelles

Use this set to review cell parts and their functions (jobs).

TermDefinition
organelles tiny structures that float in the cytoplasm; each has a special job to do
vacuole storage areas of the cell; store water, nutrients, and other materials for the cell
mitochondria takes energy from food and turns it into energy the cell can use; called the "power house" of the cell
cytoplasm the clear, thick gel-like fluid all organelles float in; helps to provide structure for the cell
ribosomes factories that make proteins for the cell; called the "hitch hiker"
chloroplast the "green machine"; it makes food from sunlight for plants through the process of photosynthesis
cell the basic unit of all living things
Golgi bodies they receive, package, sort, and deliver proteins and other materials for the cell; known as the "mailroom"
cell wall a rigid layer of cellulose that surrounds the cell; it provides shape and support for plant cells
nucleus controls what goes on inside the cell; it tells other organelles what to do and when to do it; known as the "boss" or command center
endoplasmic reticulum carries proteins and other materials around the cell; known as the "highway"
cell membrane the barrier that allows things to enter and exit the cell; also keeps bacteria out of the cell; known as the "window screen"
lysosomes known as the "clean up crew"; they get rid of worn out cell parts and waste materials
