| Disturbance | An event that disrupts the structure or function of an ecosystem |
| Diverge | To become different or move in different directions |
| DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) | The molecule that carries genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all known living organisms |
| DNA sequencing | The process of determining the precise order of nucleotides within a DNA molecule |
| Dominant | In genetics, referring to an allele that is expressed in a heterozygote, masking the effect of the recessive allele |
| double helix | The twisted-ladder structure of DNA, consisting of two complementary strands held together by hydrogen bonds |
| Earth materials | The materials that make up the Earth's surface, including rocks, minerals, soil, and water |
| ecological restoration | The process of repairing or restoring damaged ecosystems to their original state |
| Ecosystem | A community of organisms and their physical environment, interacting as a functional unit |
| ecosystem diversity | The variety of ecosystems within a given area or region |
| Ecotourism | Tourism directed toward exotic, often threatened, natural environments, intended to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife |
| egg cell | A female reproductive cell produced by the ovary, also known as an ovum |
| electron transport chain | A series of protein complexes and electron carriers in the inner mitochondrial membrane that transfer electrons and produce ATP |
| Electrophoresis | A laboratory technique used to separate and analyze DNA, RNA, or proteins based on their size and charge |
| Embryo | An early stage of development in multicellular organisms, following fertilization and preceding the fetal stage |
| Embryology | The study of embryos and their development |
| endangered species | A species that is at risk of extinction in the near future |
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change |
| energy flow | The movement of energy through an ecosystem, from producers to consumers to decomposers |
| Environment | The surroundings or conditions in which an organism lives and interacts |
| Environmental | Related to the natural world and its surroundings |
| Enzyme | A biological catalyst that speeds up chemical reactions in living organisms |
| Epigenetic | Referring to changes in gene expression that are not caused by changes in the DNA sequence itself |
| Equilibrium | A state of balance or stability in a system |
| Evolution | The process of change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations |
| evolutionary tree | A branching diagram showing the evolutionary relationships among organisms |
| exponential growth | The rapid increase in population size that occurs when resources are unlimited |
| Extinction | The permanent loss of a species or group of species |
| F1 (first filial) | The first generation of offspring resulting from a cross between two parent organisms |
| F2 (second filial) | The second generation of offspring resulting from a cross between two F1 individuals |
| fatty acid | A molecule consisting of a hydrocarbon chain and a carboxyl group, found in many lipids |
| Fermentation | The process of breaking down sugars to produce energy in the absence of oxygen, often producing alcohol or lactic acid as byproducts |
| Fertilization | The fusion of gametes to form a zygote |
| Fertilize | To fertilize an egg cell by the fusion of a sperm cell and an egg cell to form a zygote |
| Fitness | The ability of an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment, often measured by the number of offspring produced |
| Fluctuation | A change in level, strength, or value, especially irregularly or unpredictably |
