Vocabulary for Bio EOC Set 3

TermDefinition
codon (chart) A chart showing the correspondence between mRNA codons and the amino acids they code for
Coevolution The evolutionary change between interacting species
Combustion The process of burning a fuel in the presence of oxygen to produce heat, light, and carbon dioxide
Commensalism An ecological relationship in which one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped
common ancestry The idea that all organisms share a common evolutionary ancestor
Community All the different populations of organisms that live and interact in a particular area
comparative anatomy The study of similarities and differences in the anatomy of different species
Competition The interaction between organisms in which they compete for limited resources
complete dominance A genetic phenomenon in which the dominant allele completely masks the effects of the recessive allele in a heterozygote
Conservation The preservation and management of natural resources and ecosystems
Constraints Restrictions or limitations that influence the evolution of organisms
Consumers Organisms that obtain energy by consuming other organisms
convergent evolution The independent evolution of similar features in different species due to similar environmental pressures
Criteria The standards or benchmarks used to judge or evaluate something
crossing over The exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during meiosis
Cytokinesis The division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells during cell division
Cytoplasm The jelly-like substance inside a cell, where organelles are suspended
Cytosine One of the four nitrogenous bases in DNA and RNA, pairs with guanine
Cytosol The fluid portion of the cytoplasm, excluding organelles and other insoluble structures
daughter cell A cell formed by the division of a parent cell
decent with modification The process by which species change over time through descent from common ancestors, with the accumulation of small genetic changes
Decomposition The breakdown of organic matter into simpler substances by decomposers such as bacteria and fungi
Deforestation The clearing or removal of forests or trees from an area
Deletion A mutation in which a part of a chromosome or DNA sequence is lost or removed
Density The number of individuals of a species per unit area or volume
Density-dependent Affecting the population growth rate in proportion to population density
Density-independent Affecting the population growth rate regardless of population density
Deoxyribose A sugar molecule found in DNA, forming part of the backbone of the DNA molecule
Detrimental Harmful or damaging
differential gene expression The process by which different genes are expressed at different times or in different cells, leading to cell specialization
Differentiation The process by which cells become specialized in structure and function during development
dihybrid cross A genetic cross between individuals that differ in two traits
Diploid Referring to cells or organisms with two sets of chromosomes
Disease An abnormal condition that negatively affects the structure or function of an organism
Distribution The arrangement or spread of organisms in a particular area or habitat

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
