EOC Vocab Set 1

Set of vocabulary to know for the EOC

abiotic Non-living
abiotic factor A factor that is non-living , such as temperature or sunlight
abundance The number of individuals of a species present in a particular area
acidification The process of becoming more acidic
adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment
adenine One of the four nitrogenous bases in DNA and RNA, pairs with thymine in DNA and uracil in RNA
ADP (adenosine diphosphate) A molecule used as a precursor to ATP, it releases energy when its phosphate bond is broken
advantageous Beneficial or advantageous for survival
advantageous trait A beneficial characteristic that aids in survival or reproduction
aerobic cellular respiration The process of breaking down glucose in the presence of oxygen to produce ATP
alcohol (ethanol) A type of organic compound produced by fermentation
alcohol fermentation The process by which yeast cells break down sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide
allele One of the alternative forms of a gene that can occupy a specific position on a chromosome
amino acid The building blocks of proteins, linked together in a specific sequence to form a polypeptide chain
amino acid sequencing The order or arrangement of amino acids in a protein or polypeptide chain
anaerobic cellular respiration The process of breaking down glucose in the absence of oxygen to produce ATP and other byproducts
analogous structure Similar structures in different species that evolved independently to perform the same function
anaphase The stage of cell division in which sister chromatids are pulled apart towards opposite ends of the cell
anatomy The study of the structure of organisms and their parts
anthropogenic Caused by human activities
anticodon A sequence of three nucleotides on a tRNA molecule that is complementary to a specific codon on mRNA
atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding a planet
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) The primary energy currency of cells, produced during cellular respiration
autosomal Referring to chromosomes other than the sex chromosomes
Autotroph An organism that can produce its own food using energy from sunlight or inorganic compounds
Bacteria Single-celled microorganisms that lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles
Base A substance that can accept hydrogen ions (protons) or donate an electron pair
Behavior The actions and reactions of organisms to stimuli in their environment
Beneficial Having a positive effect or advantage
biochemical evidence Evidence based on the chemical composition and reactions of biological molecules
Biodiversity The variety of life forms in an ecosystem or on Earth
Biogeography The study of the distribution of species and ecosystems in geographic space and through geological time
Biomass The total mass of living organisms in a given area or ecosystem
Biome A large, naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat
Biosphere The zone of air, land, and water where organisms exist
