Water Cycle Vocab
How does water play a significant role in Earth's processes?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Water Cycle | The continuous movement of water through Earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land. |
| Hydrosphere | The combined total of all water found on, in, and above the Earth. |
| Saltwater | Water containing salt, such as sea water. |
| Freshwater | Water that does not contain salt. |
| Transpiration | The evaporation of water from a plant. |
| Sublimation | The transition from a solid directly to a gas without melting. |
| Condensation | The transition from a gas to a liquid. In water, this happens when water vapor cools off, causing it to lose energy and condense. |
| Precipitation | When water falls to earth from the atmosphere, such as snow, sleet, rain, and hail. |
| Runoff | When water flows over Earth's surface as a result of gravity. |
| Evaporation | The transition from a liquid to a gas. In water, this happens when liquid water gains energy by warming up. |
| Infiltration | The movement of water into the ground from the surface. |
| Reservoir | A storage area for water. |
