Weather Vocabulary

| warm front | Occurs when a warm air mass moves over a retreating cold air mass This brings steady, light precipitation followed by a rise in temperature. |
| cold front | Occurs when a cold air mass moves under a warm air mass and punches the warm air up. After this front moves through the temperature drops and the skies clear. |
| front | When one air mass collides with another, the line or boundary that separates them. |
| humidity | The amount of water vapor or moisture in the atmosphere. |
| air pressure | The force of the air pressing down on the Earth |
| wind vane | A device used for measuring the direction of the wind |
| water cycle | The way water enters and leaves the atmosphere. (evaporation, condensation, precipitation.) |
| wind | Air that moves and is caused by weather systems |
| air mass | Large bodies of air that form over areas where the temperature does not change. They take on the characteristics from the Earth surface over which they form. |
| air pressure | The force of the air pressing down on the Earth |
| anemometer | Device for measuring wind speed |
| atmosphere | The envelope of air surrounding the earth. |
| evaporation | The changing of liquid to a gas |
| humidity | The amount of water vapor or moisture in the atmosphere |
| hydrosphere | The portion of the Earth’s surface that is water, including the seas and water in the atmosphere |
| lithosphere | The solid layer of the Earth consisting of the crust and upper mantle |
| meteorologist | A person who forecasts the weather |
| precipitation | Any kind of water that falls out of clouds, rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
| troposphere | The lowest part of the atmosphere where almost all our weather happens |
