QuestionAnswer
What is selective breeding? a method of breeding that allows only those organisms with desired characteristics to produce the next generation
What is hybridization? crossing dissimilar individuals to bring together the best of both organisms
What is inbreeding? the continued breeding of individuals with similar characteristics
What are the ultimate source of biological diversity? mutations
What is biotechnology? the application of a technological process, invention, or method to living organisms
What is the first step in using the Polymerase Chain Reaction method to copy a gene? to heat a piece of DNA, which separates its two strands. Then as the DNA cools, primers bind to the single strands. Next, DNA polymerase starts copying the region between the primers.
What is Recombinant DNA Technology? joining together DNA from 2 or more sources, making it possible to change the genetic composition of living organisms
What are plasmids? small circular DNA molecules that some bacteria carry
What do transgenic organisms do? carry genes from other species
How are transgenic organisms produced? the insertion of recombinant DNA into the genome of a host organism
What is a clone? a member of a population of genetically identical cells produced from a single cell
What can physicians use to screen for a genetic disorder? restriction enzyme analysis
What is DNA fingerprinting? analyzing sections of DNA that may have little or no function but that vary widely from one individual to another
What do genetic markers allow scientists to do? identify transformed cells
What is forensics? the scientific study of crime scenes
